“In the economy of the relationship I have been entertaining with Ève for several years now, I am in debt. I exactly owe her, to this day, £196.43. That debt followed the production of a work she had made in response to our collaboration on the group exhibition Le Colt est Jeune et Haine (The Colt is Youth and Hatred) which took place at DOC (Paris) back in 2018 (…). I could escape, but my face is also everywhere in the documentation of one of Ève’s most ambitious project: The Anti-Social Social Club: Episode One, The Chamber of the Dispossessed (2017) (…).
These various instances of transaction and translations, which make up the foundation of Ève’s practice, but also define our current relationship, are what led me to invite independent publishing house Brook – via Rosanna Puyol – to lead, together, a two-day translation workshop, to develop further the project of making available, in French, Fred Moten and Stefano Harney’s The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning & Black Study (2013).
That this specific book was – and still is – a shared object of fascination and interrogation for me, Ève and Rosanna, only convinced me of the relevance of such event within Ève’s latest project. We three (French) also share the specificity of having lived in London simultaneously. But Rosanna and Ève didn’t know each other’s then. The proximity in distance, and the distance in proximity, are thus enacted by that threesome relationship, while echoed in the translation process, which is always an exercise in linguistic intimacy and semiotic sensuality.
It is all the more apt that we, as a chorus, decided to focus on a subsection (the last) of Chapter 6 - “Fantasy in the Hold” titled “Hapticality, or Love”; which delves into questions of touch, feeling and closeness and their relation to black politics. We thus hope that, at the end of these two days, people who would have joined, for any amount of time, will come out a bit closer to becoming “philosophers of the feel” with us, and get a better understanding of the different states of debts in which we are, together.”

Cédric Fauq (born in 1992) is a Nottingham-based French curator. He works as curator of exhibitions at Nottingham Contemporary, where he has been working since September 2017, developing exhibition projects (Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance; Sung Tieu: In Cold Print; Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio), performances (Okwui Okpokwasili; Steffani Jemison; Lou Lou Lou Sainsbury) and publications. He also writes, and develops freelance projects [DOC, Paris (2018); Sophie Tappeiner, Vienna (2018); Nir Altman, Munich (2019); Cordova, Barcelona (2020); Litost, Prague (2020)]. He co-directed clearview.ltd in London (2016-2018); and was a member of the Baltic Triennial XIII curatorial team (2017-2018).
Rosanna Puyol (born 1991, Paris, France) is a publisher, a poet and collaborates with artists on exhibition projects, video programs and performances.
Co-founder of Brook press, she publishes translations of Laura Mulvey, Shulamith Firestone, Cecilia Pavón, José Esteban Muñoz, Stefano Harney and Fred Moten, texts related to art, feminism, anti-racism, postcolonial and queer studies. Her research work focuses on poetic writing and intersectionality, and includes the organization of reading groups and translation workshops.

Launch of sale of Ève Chabanon’s ceramic cups from the exhibition The Surplus
This corpus constitutes "the surplus", a material and speculative overflow, which gives the exhibition its title. It is made up of cups, supports of new formal and plastic research, hand-made by the artist in stoneware and enamelled porcelain.
During the exhibition, Ève Chabanon replays the sales process, which is her primary source of income, while subjecting it to new rules. The price of the pieces goes up in proportion to their destocking, according to an exponential curve drawn by Sophie Cras, senior lecturer in art history and economics graduate. If the first cup is put on sale at €20, the cost price, the prices of the following cups rise slowly at first, then accelerate to reach prices that are those of craft pieces or works of art. This approach, which points out the absurdity of a system of values, joins and prolongs Ève’s artistic questioning economic processes on a personal and global scale.
The sale will begin at the end of the collective translation workshop of the book The Undercommons by Stefano Harney and Fred Moten organized by Cédric Fauq and Rosanna Puyol, on March 6 and 7, 2020 from 11am to 5pm.
It will continue until the end of the exhibition on Saturday 25 April 2020, during the opening hours of Bétonsalon - Centre d’art et de recherche: Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 7pm.

The exhibition "Chapter 3" by French artist Ève Chabanon (b. 1989) provides an insight into her long-term project, her work with a collective of international cultural workers who are in exile.
On the occasion of this exhibition we invite French and German experts to join us for an online discussion. Short presentations will highlight the various core themes of Chabanon’s artistic practice: intercultural and collaborative work, (arts &)craft vs. art, value and surplus of art and artistic work.
